Drew’s Decision is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to serving the needs of people suffering the loss of someone they love by suicide. Often support is provided through immediate companionship, funeral arrangements, fundraising and provisions, referral and coordination of services, support groups and other provisions as needed.
Our Vision Our vision is to create a society without suicide. Though this seems impossible, it isn't. With education on the signs of suicide, knowing the right questions to ask, and having regular mental health check-ups, suicide is preventable. With the correct information and diagnosis, mental illness is a treatable disease. It can be managed with medication, counseling, or with FDA approved *Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) treatments for medication resistant depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders. There is life with a mental illness. It is our goal to reach everyone with this important message of hope.
Our Story Our story began with the loss of a beloved son, grandson, brother, and father by suicide, at the young age of 20. Drew made the decision in the midst of his illness, to take his life on July 8, 2011. Our lives were forever changed on that day. After the shock wore off, and everyone went back to their normal day to day lives, we realized that our lives would never be normal again. No more quad riding boots in the floor by the front door, no more loud, headbanging music coming from downstairs, and no more oil leaks in the driveway from a vehicle that "I know I can get it running". Our lives had been changed by a decision made through they eyes of a man/child who suffered from ADD, severe depression, bipolar disorder, and abandonment. His life, like ours, was forever changed at a very young age when his birth mother made the decision to leave him and move to another state, and another state, and another state. I loved him as my own, however, that love was not enough to see him through one more day. I made the decision to help others who were going through the same pain that we were. I have made it my life's work to educate myself and other's on the signs of suicide, the risks of self-medicating, and the importance of getting regular mental health check-ups. I am available anytime, to talk to anyone who is having dark thoughts or feelings of hurting themselves. I am also always available to help those who could not be saved, by helping the loss survivors with the planning of funeral arrangements, celebration of life services, food, cleanup, urns, filing of paperwork, help with career planning, DNA testing for paternity (if needed), a safe place to share your grief, anger, resentfulness, fear, and all of the other emotions that plague you after the loss of someone you love to suicide. We help you understand that no matter the circumstances, the loss was not your fault! It was no one's fault! There is that one question that will never be answered and that is WHY? We will never know the answer to that question, but your life will find a new normal. It does take time, but with help and kindness, and a lot of patience, you will find it, just as we have. You will never get over it, but you will get through it!
